1. An apparatus configured to be fastened to a cranium, around a burr hole formed therethrough, and to receive attachment thereto a medical device anchoring mechanism, the apparatus comprising:
a substantially flat core including a ring portion, first and second fastener members, and first and second pliable arms extending laterally from the ring portion, each arm being terminated by a corresponding fastener member of the first and second fastener members, and each fastener member having an aperture to receive extension of a bone screw therethrough;
a shell encapsulating the ring portion of the core, the shell defining an orifice of the apparatus substantially centered within the ring portion of the core, and the shell including an upper surface and a lower surface, the lower surface having a contour to match the curvature of cranium around the burr hole; and
an anchoring mechanism, wherein the anchoring mechanism comprises a jaw seated against the upper surface of the shell.
