1. A delivery device for delivering a fluidic infusion medium to a user, the delivery device comprising:
a housing portion comprising an adhesive pad adapted to be secured to the user;
a reservoir located within the housing portion;
a barrel supported by and located within the housing portion, the barrel fluidly connected to the reservoir via an upstream coupling, the barrel having an interior for containing the fluidic infusion medium and a plunger moveable within the interior of the barrel along an axial direction between an insertion position and a withdrawal position;
an upstream, one-way valve fluidly coupled to the barrel via the upstream coupling and preventing fluid flow between the barrel and the reservoir;
a return spring connected to the plunger;
a dispensing assembly downstream from the barrel, the dispensing assembly comprising an acoustic volume sensing assembly;
a downstream, one-way valve fluidly coupled to the barrel via a downstream coupling;
an actuator wherein the actuator is a shape memory actuator; and
a lever pivotable along a fulcrum, wherein a first end of the lever is operatively coupled to the plunger and a second end of the lever is coupled directly to the actuator whereby the actuator moves the plunger in the axial direction of the barrel;
wherein movement of the plunger by operation of the actuator is transferred to movement of the plunger towards the insertion position in the axial direction of the barrel;
wherein movement of the plunger forces the fluidic infusion medium from the reservoir and into the barrel, wherein the return spring returns the plunger to the insertion position and does not move the plunger to the withdrawal position; and
wherein the dispensing assembly measures a volume of the fluidic infusion medium that flows out of the delivery device via the downstream coupling that is fluidly coupled to the barrel.
