8. A steerable expandable spinal implant, comprising:
a body having a hollow interior, a proximal end and a distal end, said body supporting an endplate movable relative to said body in a first direction away from said body, said body being rotatable about an axis extending along said first direction adjacent said proximal end; and
an actuatable expansion mechanism within said hollow interior and coupled to said body and said endplate to move said endplate relative to said body, said expansion mechanism comprising a rotatable drive member that is selectively rotatable in one rotational direction to rotate said body about said axis and in an opposite rotational direction to actuate said expansion mechanism to move said endplate relative to said body in said first direction to expand said spinal implant, said rotatable drive member being substantially cylindrical and supported by and rotatable relative to said body about a first central axis, and a substantially cylindrical follower supported by and rotatable relative to said body about a second central axis, said substantially cylindrical follower being spaced from and coupled to said rotatable drive member by a transmission belt to transfer rotative motion from said rotatable drive member to said substantially cylindrical follower upon actuation of said expansion mechanism.
