1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:
establishing, for each hop in pathways of a network, a relation between a desired reliability and channel error;
based on the established relations, determining a maximum number of copies of packets to send from a source device in the network to a target device in the network to attain the desired reliabilities;
determining, for each of the hops, an overhead associated with sending packets from the source device to the target device in the network, wherein a first sum of the overheads associated with sending packets from the source device to the target device is incorporated into an acknowledged pathway operative;
determining, for each of the hops, an overhead associated with sending an acknowledgement packet to the source device, wherein a second sum is a sum of the overheads associated with sending the acknowledgement packet to the source device; and
in response to a determination that a sum of the first sum and the second sum is less than a predetermined threshold value, using the pathways for communication operations.
