1. A hollow-core optical fiber configured to support and guide the propagation of light at a wavelength of 1310 nanometers, the hollow-core optical fiber comprising:
a hollow core region surrounded by a microstructured cladding region,
wherein the hollow-core optical fiber is configured to guide the propagation of light within the hollow core region by total internal reflection at an interface between the hollow core region and the microstructured cladding region such that a majority of light transmitted through the hollow-core optical fiber travels within a gas or a vacuum of the hollow core region.
