1. A biodegradable polymeric composite represented by the formula:
{[SMAC(−)D(+)B]S]}W or {[VMAC(−)D(+)B]S]}W,
wherein:
SMAC is derived from a styrene maleic acid copolymer in acid form and/or anionic form;
VMAC is derived from a copolymer of methyl vinyl ether, vinyl chloride or vinyl acetate with maleic acid in acid form or anionic form;
D represents a counterion when SMAC is in anionic form;
B represents a biopolymer selected from a protein, soybean protein, collagen, collagenic biopolymer, gelatin, collagen hydrolysate, albumin, guar or starch and casein,
S is derived from a crosslinking agent selected from glycerin, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol or polyether hydroxyl;
W represents water bonded to the composite; and
the polymeric composite having an absorbency under load (AUL) that is higher than 20 g/g in aqueous solution of 0.9% NaCl at pressure of 0.9 psi.
