1. A computer system, comprising:
a verification database storing information for a plurality of items of digital media content, wherein each item has a respective identifier, respective metadata describing the digital media content, and respective verification information for the item;
a server computer accessing the verification database and configured to:
receive and store in the verification database, for each of the plurality of items of digital media content, the respective identifier, the respective metadata describing the digital media content, and the respective verification information for the item;
receive, for items of distributed media content, respective verification information for the item;
using the respective verification information from an item of distributed media content, access the verification database to retrieve at least one of the respective identifier, the respective metadata, or the respective verification information of a matching item.
