1. A method, comprising:
sending, from a configuration server of a distributed computing environment, over a network, to different nodes of the distributed computing environment at different locations on the network, different network communications each comprising a representation of at least a first sequence of a plurality of successive traffic classification decisions to be used to categorize network packets into traffic categories, wherein within the first sequence, successive ones of the plurality of traffic classification decisions correspond to successively narrower traffic categories;
receiving, over the network, at the different nodes of the distributed computing environment at different locations on the network, the representation of at least the first sequence of traffic classification decisions to be used to categorize network packets into traffic categories;
determining, at a node of the nodes using the first sequence of traffic classification decisions to be used to categorize network packets, that a particular network packet belongs to a child category of a parent category of the traffic categories; and
based at least in part on said determining that the particular network packet belongs to the child category, initiating, at the node, a transmission of the particular network packet.
