1. A process comprising combining:
(A) lignin, lignocellulose, vanillic acid and/or vanillin; and
(B) bacteria modified to express protocatechuate 2,3-dioxygenase, wherein the bacteria comprise a praA gene that encodes the protocatechuate 2,3-dioxygenase;
to produce 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid.
