1. A method for making a compound having the formula Nau+yNw−yMyLazCl3−vXv, wherein
N is Ta, Nb, or a combination thereof;
M is Zr, Hf, or a combination thereof;
u is from 0.1 to 0.7;
when v is not zero, X is Br or I;
the sum (u+y)+5(w−y)+4y+3z is equal to 3;
w is from 0.04 to 0.40;
v is less than or equal to 3;
y is from zero to less than 0.4;
z is not zero; and
the sum of u+y is from 0.10 to 0.75,
the method comprising mixing in the solid state NaCl, NCl5, MCl4, LaCl3, and optionally NaBr or NaI.
