1. An exercise machine, comprising:
a cable;
a motor mechanically coupled to the cable to provide resistance during an exercise by tensioning the cable;
a sensor that detects a state of the cable, wherein the state of the cable comprises a speed of the cable; and
a controller that:
during a readiness-detection phase:
controls the resistance provided by the motor according to a first resistance profile; and
determines a readiness of a user to accept a target resistance for performing the exercise based at least in part on the detected speed of the cable; and
responsive to determining that the user is ready to accept the target resistance for performing the exercise, switches to controlling the resistance provided by the motor according to a second resistance profile different from the first resistance profile.
