1. An audience measurement computing system comprising:
a processor;
at least one memory having stored thereon computer readable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the audience measurement computing system to perform operations including:
determining a first time of detection of a first watermark detected in media;
determining a second time of detection of a second watermark detected in the media, the second time after the first time, wherein the first and second watermarks are associated with a category;
determining a category-specific signature search window based on the first time and the second time; and
identifying a matching reference signature corresponding to a query signature generated from a portion of the media within the category-specific signature search window by comparing the query signature with a subset of reference signatures associated with the category with which the first and second watermarks are also associated, wherein the matching reference signature corresponds to the portion of the media, and wherein the subset of reference signatures is generated from reference media associated with the category.
