1. An image pickup apparatus comprising:
at least one processor; and
a memory coupled to the processor storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to function as:
an acquisition unit to acquire images of a plurality of frames;
a synthesis unit to synthesize the images of the plurality of frames to generate a multiple-exposure image;
a first detection unit to detect at least one or more subjects with respect to at least one of the images of the plurality of frames, the first detection unit including a subject type judgement unit configured to judge a subject type of the at least one or more subjects;
a determination unit to determine a subject type of a main subject of the multiple-exposure image based on a detection result obtained by the first detection unit,
wherein the determination unit determines one of the subject types of the at least one or more subjects judged by the subject type judgement unit as the subject type of the main subject of the multiple-exposure image, and
wherein, in a case that a priority subject type set by a user does not exist among the subject types of the at least one or more subjects judged by the subject type judgement unit, the determination unit determines the subject type of the main subject of the multiple-exposure image in response to a subject position of the at least one or more subjects; and
a second detection unit to detect a subject of the determined subject type with respect to the multiple-exposure image.
