1. A device for determining a sedimentation rate, comprising:
at least one member for sampling a blood sample,
a sensor comprising an infrared light source and an optical sensor arranged substantially opposite each other around a substantially transparent portion of the sampling member so that the light emitted by the infrared light source reaches the optical sensor after passing through said substantially transparent portion, the optical sensor being arranged to carry out one or more light transmission measurements based on the light emitted by the infrared light source and passing through the substantially transparent portion of the sampling member in the presence of the blood sample, the optical sensor being further arranged to carry out a blank measurement based on the light emitted by the infrared light source and passing through the substantially transparent portion of the sampling member in the absence of the blood sample, and
a converter arranged so as to receive the one or more light transmission measurements and the blank measurement from the optical sensor, to calculate a ratio between the blank measurement and the one or more light transmission measurements and to return a sedimentation rate.
