1. An electronic vapor provision system comprising:
a control unit configured to provide power from a battery in the control unit to components of the system, and comprising a controller configured to control components of the system; and
an aerosolizable substrate material carrying portion separably connectable to the control unit to obtain power from the battery, and comprising:
an electrical circuit including a characteristic-carrying element, the characteristic-carrying element comprising a readable memory storing data, and a vapor generating element configured to generate an inhalable vapor from an aerosolizable substrate material; and
a switching arrangement operable by the controller to selectively provide power from the battery to the vapor generating element;
wherein the controller is configured to operate in a first mode in which a characteristic of the characteristic-carrying element is determined from the data stored by the readable memory of the characteristic-carrying element, and if it is found from the determined characteristic that the aerosolizable substrate material carrying portion is incompatible with the control unit, the controller is further configured to operate the switching arrangement to prevent the supply of power from the battery to the vapor generating element.
