1. A method of preparing a medical apparatus having a distal end with a viewport, the method comprising:
a. providing a plasma applicator electrically associated with a power source and having a slot;
b. inserting into the slot a protecting shroud comprising:
i. a hollow cylinder extending between an opening of the cylinder and a cylinder end, dimensioned to receive therein a distal end of the medical apparatus,
ii. a vacuum seal positioned along an inner circumference of said hollow cylinder, the vacuum seal dimensioned to surround an external diameter of the medical apparatus,
iii. an electrode being electrically connectable to the power source, and
iv. a stopper in the hollow cylinder, the stopper configured to limit advancement of the viewport within the hollow cylinder to form a gap between the electrode and the viewport;
c. inserting the distal end of the medical apparatus through the opening towards the cylinder end until advancement is limited to form the gap; and
d. supplying power from the power source to the electrode to generate plasma in the gap between the electrode and the viewport.
