1. An apparatus enabled to selectively choose a baud rate for communication of coherent optical data, the apparatus comprising:
a modem coupled to an optical link to operate with a coherent optical signal modulated at a plurality of baud rates, wherein the modem contains logic enabled to:
adjust a baud rate from the plurality of baud rates to a selected baud rate based on a modulation format and an available passband of the optical link.
