1. An image processing apparatus comprising:
a memory that stores instructions; and
a processor that executes the instructions to perform:
acquiring a character recognition result by performing character recognition processing on a document image;
detecting a character string candidate described in a predetermined format corresponding to a telephone number from the character recognition result;
determining a likelihood of the character string candidate to increase based on another character string existing in the vicinity of the detected character string candidate,
wherein the another character string indicates an item name of a telephone number; and
outputting an item value based on:
a character string candidate having a high likelihood, in a case where at least one character string candidate is determined to exceed a likelihood threshold; and
a character string from a different metadata field in the character recognition result, in a case where none of the character string candidates exceed the likelihood threshold.
