1. Amphiphilic alginic acid particles obtained by subjecting a polyvalent metal salt of alginic acid to hydrophobizing treatment using a hydrophobizing agent,
wherein the particles are hydrophobized by way of chemical bonding between some metal ions in the polyvalent metal salt of alginic acid and the hydrophobizing agent, have a contact angle 30 seconds after a water droplet is placed on the particles of at least 30° and not more than 150°, and have a water absorption per 100 g of particles and an oil absorption per 100 g of particles such that the water absorption is equal to or greater than the oil absorption.
