1. A catalyst material comprising an electrocatalyst supported on a catalyst support material, wherein the catalyst support material comprises a metal carbonitride comprising:
(i) a first metal, M1; and
(ii) a second metal, M2,
wherein M1 is titanium, zirconium, or hafnium, and M2 is vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, ruthenium, or osmium, and,
wherein the metal carbonitride has a composition represented as M2xM11-xC1-pNp, wherein x is 0.05 to 0.95 and p is 0.1 to 0.7.
