1. An instrument for determining macular pigment of a macula of a human eye, comprising:
a housing including a lower hand-held portion with a user-input button and a display for displaying an MPOD score for a user, the lower hand-held portion further including a battery and electronics for operating the instrument;
a viewing tube coupled to the lower hand-held portion and terminating in an eye cup, the viewing tube being transverse to the lower hand-held portion;
a blocking wall located within the viewing tube, the blocking wall having an aperture and defining a first portion and a second portion of the viewing tube, the first portion terminating in the eye cup;
a first light source located within the second portion of the viewing tube for transmitting light in a direction from the second portion of the viewing tube through the aperture in the blocking wall and into the first portion of the viewing tube, the light from the first light source being a first colored light and a second colored light alternating at a frequency to create a flicker that is used for determining an amount of macular pigment of the macula of the user; and
a second light source located in the first portion of the viewing tube and configured to illuminate a surface of the blocking wall, the second light source providing a third colored light that is a different color than the first and second colored lights.
