1. A playback device comprising:
a housing carrying a physical hardware component and at least one sensor, wherein the physical hardware component comprises a wireless network interface;
at least one processor; and
at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to:
enter a low-power state, wherein the physical hardware component is configured to operate in a first mode when the playback device is in the low-power state, and wherein operation in the first mode consumes less power relative to a second mode;
while in the low-power state, monitor for user proximity conditions, wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to monitor for user proximity conditions comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to:
monitor, via the at least one sensor, for sensor data indicative of movement in proximity to the playback device, wherein the at least one sensor is configured to detect the movement in proximity to the playback device before the user touches the housing of the playback device; and
when the sensor data indicative of movement in proximity to the playback device is detected via the at least one sensor, enter an active state, wherein the physical hardware component is configured to operate in the second mode when the playback device is in the active state, wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to enter the active state comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to:
switch the wireless network interface from operation in the first mode to operation in the second mode; and
while in the active state, perform at least one function via the physical hardware component.
