1. A headphone system for playback of recorded sound with enhanced perception of sound localization by a user of the headphone system, comprising:
a right earpiece comprising:
a right main speaker located in a first area of the right earpiece; and
a right localization speaker located in a second area of the right earpiece; and
a left earpiece comprising:
a left main speaker located in a first area of the left earpiece; and
a left localization speaker located in a second area of the left earpiece, wherein:
the headphone system is configured to receive multiple types of input including:
a two-channel input comprising a right channel input and a left channel input; and
a four-channel input;
the headphone system is configured to distinguish between the two-channel input and the four-channel input; and
when the headphone system receives the two-channel input, the headphone system converts the two-channel input into a simulated four-channel input comprising:
a first input comprising the right channel input;
a second input comprising a modified version of the right channel input;
a third input comprising the left channel input; and
a fourth input comprising a modified version of the left channel input
delivers the first input to the right main speaker;
delivers the second input to the left localization speaker;
delivers the third input to the left main speaker; and
delivers the fourth input to the right localization speaker.
