1. A mobile device comprising:
a cellular radio transceiver, configured to:
receive data transmissions from a gNodeB, over a physical telecommunications channel, wherein at least a subset of the data transmissions include:
user data, and
a demodulation reference signal (DMRS);
at least one hardware processor coupled to the cellular radio transceiver; and
at least one non-transitory memory storing instructions, which, when executed by the at least one hardware processor, cause the mobile device to:
generate a first channel estimate for the physical telecommunications channel based on a first DMRS received at the cellular radio transceiver, the first DMRS transmitted to the mobile device at a first number of symbol positions of an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme;
demodulate a first data transmission received over the physical telecommunications channel based at least in part on the first channel estimate;
detect a condition trigger to change a format of the DMRS to have a second number of symbol positions, different from the first number;
in response to detecting the condition trigger, request, from the gNodeB, the DMRS with the second number of symbol positions; and
demodulate a second data transmission received over the physical telecommunications channel based at least in part on a second channel estimate for the physical telecommunications channel that is generated using a DMRS transmitted at the second number of symbol positions.
