1. A method comprising:
receiving at a first optical transceiver module, via an optical fiber, from a second optical transceiver module, an optical transmission modulated with data that indicates a transceiver type of the second optical transceiver module;
determining at the first optical transceiver module, based on the transceiver type of the second optical transceiver module, whether the first optical transceiver module is operationally compatible with the second optical transceiver module; and
presenting on a host device connected to the first optical transceiver module or on the first optical transceiver module, an indication of whether the first optical transceiver module is operationally compatible with the second optical transceiver module.
