1. A sample holder for molecular analysis, the sample holder comprising:
a base;
a carrier sheet attached to the base, the carrier sheet forming an aperture; and
an X-ray transparent polymer sample support film including a pattern of regions with thick regions and thin regions thinner than the thick regions, wherein the sample support film spans and is sealed to the aperture of the carrier sheet, and wherein one or more of the thin regions of the sample support film define transparent windows for examining samples,
wherein each of the transparent windows of the sample support film is configured to accept a sample in a liquid.
