1. An electrospray emitter comprising:
an emitter structure connected to a reservoir containing a working material, wherein the working material is in electrical communication with a first electrode; and
a grid electrode separated from a tip of the emitter structure by a distance between about 0 micrometers and about 50 micrometers, wherein a surface of the grid electrode proximal the emitter structure comprises
a degradable coating that undergoes an electrochemical reaction with the working material when an electrical current exceeds a threshold current;
wherein a surface of the grid electrode distal the emitter structure does not comprise the degradable coating.
