1. An identity verification device for verification of a digital credential, comprising:
a computer processor;
a memory storing an application executable by the computer processor to implement a verification process that verifies authenticity of the digital credential;
a user device communication interface for operative communication with a user device associated with a human user, the user device communication interface operative to receive, from the user device, proffered digital credential information of the digital credential of the human user stored locally on the user device; and
a relying party communication interface operative:
to provide a request for verification of the proffered digital credential information to an intermediary credential service platform for verification of the proffered digital credential information presented by the user device, wherein the request includes an indication of an issuing authority credential standard associated with an issuing authority of the digital credential and requested identity information according to a configuration prescribed by a relying party associated with the identity verification device, and
to receive verification of the digital credential from the intermediary credential service platform after application of the issuing authority credentialing standard to the proffered digital credential information, wherein the issuing authority credentialing standard is selected from a plurality of issuing authority credentialing standards stored in a digital identity credentialing database maintained by the intermediary credential service platform and the issuing authority credentialing standard defines a manner in which the digital credential issued by the issuing authority of the digital credential is to be validated for verification of the authenticity of the digital credential; and
a verification indicator operative to provide an indication of verification status to the relying party associated with the identity verification device with the requested identity information.
