1. A stylus configured to sense an external object, comprising:
an elongated stylus housing having a tip and an opposing end;
a light source configured to emit light toward the external object;
an ambient light sensor configured to make an ambient light sensor measurement of light that has reflected off of the external object, wherein the ambient light sensor measurement includes an angle of the reflected light; and
control circuitry configured to determine a texture of the external object based on the angle of the reflected light.
