1. A layered metal comprising:
a metallic substrate; and
a coating that coats an external surface of the metallic substrate to increase resistance of the metallic substrate to hydrogen-induced cracking in a downhole environment, the coating comprising:
a first layer that is exposed to hydrogen and that comprises a nanomaterial or a ceramic material;
a second layer between the first layer and a third layer; and
the third layer between the second layer and the metallic substrate,
wherein a first entropy of the third layer is lower than a second entropy of the second layer, and wherein the first entropy is higher than a third entropy of the metallic substrate.
