1. An absorbent article comprising:
a chassis comprising a topsheet, a backsheet, and an absorbent core disposed between the topsheet and backsheet;
a lateral extension element joined to the chassis;
a first waist region, a second waist region and a crotch region disposed between the first and second waist region;
a fastening system comprising a fastening component disposed on a wearer-facing surface of the article in the first waist region, wherein the fastening component comprises hooks integrally formed from a portion of the chassis such that the hooks are integral with the portion of the chassis; and
a stiffening component disposed in overlapping relationship with the fastening component forming a first bending resistant zone;
wherein stiffness of the first waist region varies in a lateral direction, such that a stiffness of the first bending resistant zone is greater than a stiffness of the first waist region disposed laterally inboard of the first bending resistant zone.
