1. A method of cultivating carageenophytic seaweed, the method comprising:
a. providing a reproductive tissue of the seaweed;
b. releasing spores from the reproductive tissue by:
(i) contacting the reproductive tissue with a non-saline aqueous solution;
(ii) at least partially dehydrating the reproductive tissue;
(iii) contacting said at least partially dehydrated tissue with a first saline solution to produce a spore-containing saline; and
(iv) optionally filtering the spore-containing saline;
c. adding the spore-containing saline to a container containing a second saline solution and a substrate and allowing the spores to settle on the substrate, wherein said substrate is at least partially immersed in said second saline solution;
d. germinating spores on the substrate; and
e. growing the seaweed from the germinated spores.
