1. A method for maintaining a snapshot of a multitier distributed file system, comprising:
creating a snapshot directory volume for a directory volume associated with a first tier of the multitier distributed file system at least in part by copying, to the snapshot directory volume, directory metadata stored on the directory volume;
creating a snapshot file record associated with a file stored on a volume associated with a second tier of the multitier distributed file system, wherein the file is in a directory that is associated with the directory metadata; and
associating the snapshot directory volume with the snapshot file record to enable access to the snapshot file record from the snapshot directory volume.
