1. An optical system, comprising:
a display matrix resulting in an optical system that displays images such that image depths to a viewer are different than a depth of a surface of the display matrix to the viewer;
a secondary light source that is optically coupled to the display matrix, the secondary light source comprising a nanostructure that impacts light received from the display matrix;
a reflective element that is transparent with respect to the display matrix but reflective with respect to the secondary light source, the reflective element being disposed between the display matrix and the secondary light source; and
a semi-reflective layer disposed after the secondary light source, such that reflection of light from the secondary light source by the reflective element and back through the semi-reflective element results in greater than 25% of an energy of the light from the display matrix exiting the optical system.
