1. A method for providing intraosseous access, the method comprising:
providing a driver and a penetrator assembly, the driver comprising:
a housing having a proximal end, a distal end, a handle defining a hollow container, and an opening on the distal end of the housing;
a motor disposed within a first segment of the housing;
a power supply and associated electrical circuitry operable to power the motor, the power supply disposed within the hollow container of the handle;
a trigger assembly operable to activate the motor;
a gear assembly disposed within a second segment of the housing and engaged with the motor, the gear assembly being generally aligned with the motor; and
a drive shaft rotatably engaged with the gear assembly and extending from an end of the gear assembly opposite from the motor, a portion of the drive shaft extending through the opening on the distal end of the housing;
the penetrator assembly comprising:
a connector having a first connector end, a second connector end, and a stylet extending from the second connector end, the first connector end including a connector receptacle, and the second connector end including a first connecting portion; and
a hub having a first hub end, a second hub end, and a hollow cannula extending from the second hub end, the first hub end including a second connecting portion complementary to the first connecting portion on the second connector end of the connector, the first connecting portion of the connector configured to releasably engage the second connecting portion of the hub, and the hollow cannula configured to receive the stylet; and
attaching the penetrator assembly to the driver by inserting the drive shaft of the driver into the connector receptacle of the connector;
inserting the penetrator assembly into a bone and associated bone marrow by means of the driver;
detaching the driver from the penetrator assembly by removing the drive shaft of the driver from the connector receptacle of the connector; and
removing the stylet from the cannula of the penetrator assembly.
