1. A method performed by a head-mounted display (HMD) device operable by a user to optimize an auto-focus implementation, comprising:
enabling auto-focus operations for a camera in the HMD device, the camera being configured to capture a scene in a local physical environment surrounding the HMD device over a field of view (FOV);
detecting, using a gaze detection subsystem comprising a sensor in the HMD device, a location of focus of an eye of the user within the FOV; and
controlling, using the location of focus in the FOV, the auto-focus operations for the camera according to a criterion of an auto-focus subsystem, the criterion indicating that the user is interacting with a virtual object within the FOV.
