1. A method of reducing coughing in an individual comprising administering by inhalation by the individual aerosolized droplets having a mass median aerodynamic diameter of between 8 and less than 15 microns of a sterile aqueous salt solution having a pH adjusted with a pH adjusting agent to between 7.5 and 10 and consisting of the pH adjusting agent and between 2% and 7% by weight of salt selected from the group consisting of CaCl2), MgCl2 and combinations thereof, in water.
