1. A method of operating an electronic device subject to a regulatory limit on transmitted power over an averaging period, the method comprising:
transmitting, using one or more antennas, radio-frequency signals at a first transmit power level during a first portion of the averaging period when an external object is at a first distance from the one or more antennas; and
transmitting, using the one or more antennas, the radio-frequency signals at a second transmit power level that is higher than the first transmit power level during a second portion of the averaging period when the external object is at a second distance from the one or more antennas, the second distance being closer than the first distance.
