1. A method, performed by a virtual base station, for reducing intercell interference between a first cell group and a second cell group, the first cell group corresponding to a first baseband unit and the second cell group corresponding to a second baseband unit, wherein the first baseband unit and the second baseband unit are mutually coupled by a low latency switch fabric, the method comprising:
identifying intercell interference between the first cell group and the second cell group, the intercell interference occurring at a serving frequency;
determining a total number of connected User Equipment (UEs) including a first number of UEs connected to the first cell group and a second number of UEs connected to the second cell group;
determining if the first baseband unit or the second baseband unit can service the total number of connected UEs;
if the first baseband unit or the second baseband unit can service the total number of UEs, merging the first cell group and the second cell group under control of one of the first or second baseband units that can service the total number of connected UEs; and
if neither of the first baseband unit and the second baseband unit can service the total number of connected UEs, performing intercell interference mitigation between the first baseband unit and the second baseband unit.
