1. A method for detecting data transmitted using one of a plurality of communications protocols, the method comprising:
receiving a window of frequency deviation samples of an oversampled received signal;
correlating frequency deviation samples for a first chip position of a first symbol in the window with each of a set of predetermined chip sequences to generate correlation values and providing a maximum correlation value for the first chip position of the first symbol in the window; and
determining whether to use one-symbol detection or two-symbol detection to detect data in the window based on an upper threshold value and at least the maximum correlation value.
