A1 is selected from the group consisting of O, S, Se, BR, CRR′, SiRR′, and NR;
A2 is selected from the group consisting of N and CR;
Z1, Z2, and Z3 are each independently C or N;
ring C and ring D are each independently a 5-membered or 6-membered heterocyclic or carbocyclic ring;
L represents a direct bond or a linker comprising one backbone atom selected from the group consisting of
and with L being a linker when one or both of ring C and ring D are 6-membered rings;
L1 and L2 are each independently a direct bond, a linking group selected from the group consisting
and combinations thereof, or absent, but not both absent at the same time;
RA, RB, RC, and RD each independently represents zero, mono, or up to the maximum allowed number of substitutions to its associated ring;
each of R, R′, RA, RB, RC, and RD is independently a hydrogen or a substituent selected from the group consisting of deuterium, halogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, heteroalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, arylalkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, amino, silyl, boryl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, heteroalkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroaryl, acyl, carboxylic acid, ether, ester, nitrile, isonitrile, sulfanyl, sulfinyl, sulfonyl, phosphino, and combinations thereof;
M is Pd or Pt;
any two adjacent R, R′, RA, RB, RC, and RD can be joined or fused together to form a ring and
