1. A surgical instrument configured to be coupled to an ultrasonic oscillation mechanism for resection of tissue under suction, said surgical instrument comprising:
a shaft defining a passageway and comprising a vibration conversion mechanism configured to convert vibration transmitted from the ultrasonic oscillation mechanism to a composite motion relative to a longitudinal axis of the shaft; and
a tip extending from said shaft and comprising an inner surface, the inner surface defining a lumen in communication with said passageway of said shaft, an outer surface opposite said inner surface of the lumen, and teeth formed by slots extending from said inner surface of the lumen to said outer surface so that said teeth are circumferentially arranged about said tip, wherein said composite motion of said shaft is configured to move said tip in a combined longitudinal and torsional vibration in a first direction, and in a second direction opposite the first direction,
wherein each of said teeth comprises a planar distal end, a distal cutting edge extending between said inner surface of the lumen and said outer surface at said planar distal end, and a side cutting edge defined between said outer surface and a side surface defining one of said slots, wherein said distal cutting edge and said side cutting edge are configured to slice the tissue with the tip moving in the first direction and pull the tissue with the tip moving in the second direction.
