1. A surgical stapling instrument system, comprising:
(a) a stapling instrument;
(b) a staple cartridge configured to be attached to the stapling instrument;
(c) staples removably stored within the staple cartridge;
(d) a first jaw;
(e) a second jaw moveable relative to the first jaw, wherein the second jaw is moveable relative to the first jaw between a locked position, an unlocked unclamped position, and a clamped position; and
(f) a lock system configured to permit the second jaw to move to the clamped position when the staple cartridge is attached to the stapling instrument, and wherein the lock system is further configured to lock the second jaw in the locked position as a result of the staple cartridge not being attached to the stapling instrument,
wherein the second jaw comprises a mounting portion pivotally supported on the first jaw, wherein the lock system comprises a lock member that is biased against the mounting portion, wherein the second jaw comprises a pair of trunnions, wherein the first jaw comprises a pair of trunnion slots configured to receive the pair of trunnions.
