1. A method for decoding a picture from a bitstream, the method comprising:
obtaining a tile column width value (TW) specifying a width of a tile column in units of coding tree blocks (CTBs), wherein obtaining TW comprises: i) decoding a value of a particular code word included in the bitstream and ii) setting TW equal to the decoded value of the particular code word or setting TW equal to the decoded value of the particular code word plus 1;
obtaining a picture width value (PW) for the picture; and
obtaining a set of N tile column width values for the picture, where N=ceiling (PW/TW) and N>1, wherein
the step of obtaining the set of N tile column width values comprises:
setting N−1 tile column width variables equal to TW; and
setting another tile column width variable equal to a width value that is equal to: PW−((N−1)×TW), and
the step of setting the N−1 tile column width variables equal to TW comprises:
determining that the value of a remaining width variable satisfies a criterion; and
as a result of determining that the value of the remaining width variable satisfies the criterion:
i) setting one of the N−1 tile column width variables equal to TW; and
ii) modifying the value of the remaining width variable.
