1. A smart, digital distributed antenna system incorporated on a single hardware platform, the single hardware platform configured to support multi-frequency, multi-carrier, and multi-Radio Access Technology (RAT) wireless communications, the single hardware platform, comprising:
one or more multi-radio access technology digital units (mDUs) configured to provide both digital and analog capabilities for multiple frequency bands of wireless communications, each mDU comprising:
a radio management unit, comprising:
a software multiplexer, comprising:
a digital signal mapper configured to combine digital communications signals comprising multiple radio access technologies and multiple frequency bands into a single digital signal, and
a digital signal de-mapper configured to separate digital signals according to radio access technology and frequency band;
a field programmable gate array (FPGA) coupled to the software multiplexer, the FPGA configured to receive the single digital signal from the software multiplexer, and to provide the single digital signal to a remote radio unit and to receive multiple radio access technologies and multiple radio frequency signals from the remote radio unit; and
a single optical fiber interface (PCIe) coupled to the FPGA and configured to connect through a single fiber optical cable to one or more mobile radio units (mRUs), each mRU configured to connect to a digital transmit/receive antenna.
