1. A playback device comprising:
one or more output terminals couplable to one or more input terminals of a passive speaker of a particular type, the particular type of passive speaker having particular acoustic characteristics;
an audio stage comprising one or more audio amplifiers configured to drive passive speakers connected to the one or more output terminals;
a reader circuit;
one or more processors;
at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium; and
a housing carrying the one or more output terminals, the audio stage, the reader circuit, the one or more processors, and the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium, the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the playback device is configured to:
query a passive speaker identification circuit of the passive speaker by causing the reader circuit to output, via the one or more output terminals, a query signal to the one or more input terminals of the passive speaker, wherein the reader circuit receives, via the one or more output terminals, a response signal in response to the query signal;
determine the particular type of the passive speaker based on the response signal;
apply a speaker calibration to the playback device that at least partially offsets acoustic characteristics of passive speakers that are of the determined particular type;
adjust settings of an acoustic calibration from a first configuration to a second configuration that corresponds to the determined particular type of the passive speaker, wherein the second configuration reduces current delivered to the passive speaker when outputting calibration audio signals output during an acoustic calibration;
while the speaker calibration is applied to the playback device, perform the acoustic calibration of the passive speaker in a particular environment, wherein the program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the playback device is configured to perform the acoustic calibration of the passive speaker in the particular environment comprise program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the playback device is configured to:
output calibration audio according to the second configuration of the acoustic calibration; and
apply calibration settings from the acoustic calibration that at least partially offset acoustic characteristics of the particular environment.
