1. A method, comprising:
at a user equipment (UE) equipped with multiple radio frequency (RF) chains:
decoding a first message received from a base station, the first message including a request for the UE to provide a measurement gap preference information element (IE) to the base station, the measurement gap preference IE configured to indicate a preference for one type of measurement gap from a set of three different types of measurement gaps including: i) a regular measurement gap, ii) a small measurement gap, and iii) no measurement gap;
encoding a second message to be sent to the base station, the second message comprising (i) the measurement gap preference IE, (ii) an indication of whether the UE supports per serving cell measurement gap, (iii) an indication of a number of frequencies to be measured by the UE and (iv) a serving identifier for two or more cells configured for carrier aggregation for the UE, wherein the second message comprises a radio resource control (RRC) message;
receiving an indication of a carrier aggregation specific measurement gap configuration; and
performing measurement gap measurements according to the carrier aggregation specific measurement gap configuration.
