1. A method of charging batteries, comprising:
(a) applying, over a first time period, charge to terminals of a battery undergoing a charging process;
(b) measuring a terminal voltage between the terminals of the battery multiple times over a period of time that includes at least a portion of the first time period;
(c) from the measurements of the terminal voltage in (b), determining whether one or more values of the measured terminal voltage are greater than a predetermined upper limit value; and
(d) based on the determination in (c), modifying at least one characteristic of the charging process applied over a second time period, such that a measurement of the terminal voltage of the battery during at least a portion of the second time period is less than the predetermined upper limit value, wherein the at least one characteristic of the charging process comprises at least one of: a shape of a charging signal, a duration associated with the charging signal, a duty cycle associated with the charging signal, a polarity associated with the charging signal, or an amplitude associated with the charging signal.
