1. A method for detecting an electrical discharge in an electrical apparatus, comprising:
sensing an acoustic wave and an electromagnetic wave using a first sensing device and generating a first combined signal, wherein the first combined signal is a single signal including a component corresponding to the acoustic wave and a component corresponding to the electromagnetic wave; and
processing the first combined signal to determine the occurrence and/or properties of an electrical discharge, wherein the processing comprises:
generating a first electromagnetic signal from a component of the first combined signal corresponding to the electromagnetic wave;
generating a first acoustic signal from a component of the first combined signal corresponding to the acoustic wave; and
categorizing the electrical discharge based on the first electromagnetic signal and the first acoustic signal to determine whether the electrical discharge corresponds to an internal partial discharge, a surface partial discharge, or an external disturbance.
