1. A method for producing images of a subject using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, the steps of the method comprising:
(a) acquiring data from a volume in the subject with the MRI system using a pulse sequence in which the data are simultaneously acquired in each repetition time period of the pulse sequence as first data from a first slice and second data from a second slice that is orthogonal to the first slice, wherein the pulse sequence is repeated for a number of repetition time periods during which a position of the first slice remains static and a position of the second slice is changed such that the second data are acquired from different slices in the volume that are each orthogonal to the first slice;
(b) reconstructing a series of first images from the first data; and
(c) reconstructing a series of second images from the second data,
wherein the pulse sequence comprises:
simultaneously acquiring the first data from the first slice and from a third slice that is parallel with the first slice, wherein a position of the third slice is changed in each of the number of repetition time periods; and
simultaneously acquiring the second data from the second slice and from a fourth slice that is parallel with the second slice, wherein a position of the fourth slice remains static in each of the number of repetition time periods,
wherein the first slice corresponds to a first navigator slice, and the fourth slice corresponds to a second navigator slice, wherein the first navigator slice is used to retrospectively bin images acquired at the second slice into corresponding motion bins, and wherein the second navigator slice is used to retrospectively bin images acquired at the third slice into corresponding motion bins.
